reunion
2006-02-26 - 1:41 p.m.

We had our hypnobirth class reunion yesterday. It was so cool to see everyone with their babies, and so nice to have a group of folks all going through the same things at the same time. It was only supposed to go for 2 hours, but most of us stayed an extra hour and a half just chatting about the wonderous little ones we now have and sharing tips.

One of the couples announced that their baby has Downs. I very nearly cried when they said so, but I knew that wasn't a response to have -- but I didn't really no how to respond. Nothing seemed like the right thing to say. One doesn't say "I'm sorry" or something like "Down's babies are always so loving." A million things went through my head, but all I could say was "oh, he's a beautiful little boy" and try really hard not to incline from my tone that I empathized -- because I doubt one wants empathy when one has a child who'll face a lot of life challenges while sitting in a room with 5 other couples who children don't have Down's and won't have any idea what it's like.
